Memorial Day typically marks the start of the summer vacation season. The holiday is always the last Monday in May which this year falls on Monday, May 30, 2016.
Memorial Day originated in 1868 as Decoration Day after the American Civil War. After World War II the day was used to honor soldiers who died in all wars. In 1967 the name of the holiday was changed to Memorial Day. It’s about honoring those who fight for our freedom and remembering the service men and women who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces.
Here are some things you can do honor our military:
At 3pm local time, the National Moment of Remembrance is observed. Spend a moment reflecting on the men and women who fight for our county. If you fly a our nation’s flag, be sure to fly it at half mast until noon. Visit a war memorial and learn about the history of the battles and the soldiers who fought them. You could consider donating to a charity that helps the families of those who have lost their lives. Wearing red, white, and blue is a fine wayto show your support.
Most people enjoy the 3-day weekend with their friends and family by taking some time off from work or school. A lot of folks like to plan a vacation for the Memorial Day weekend. They head for the beach or their favorite spot in the great outdoors. Others prefer barbecuing or picnicking in their own backyard. The mall is a huge draw for those looking to benefit from the many Memorial Day sales.
